The University of Ottawa Choir is a bilingual adult choir affiliated with the School of Music at the University.

The Choir offers the opportunity for singers to expand their knowledge by performing a wide variety of vocal styles and repertoire and aims to improve their sight-reading, linguistic and vocal/choral ensemble skills. Part of its mandate is to act as an ambassador for the University and to demonstrate its commitment to the community and excellence in choral music.

The Choir performs at least two major concerts during its regular season—one in the Fall semester and the other at the end of the Winter semester, in early April. The Choir also performs additional concerts with other ensembles outside of its regular schedule.

The Flying Canoe Cantata and Other Canadian Songs

Heartfelt thanks to our audience members who came on April 12 to hear the world premiere of the “Cantate de la Chasse-Galerie” by Rémi St-Jacques with lyrics by Félix Delage-Laurin, inspired by the French-Canadian legend of the flying canoe. The Choir is proud to have commissioned this wonderful work, with five other Canadian francophone choral groups. It was also performed in Edmonton on the same day and delighted audiences in Montreal and New Brunswick soon after.

We sincerely thank the Franco-Ontarian Foundation (fonds Mouvement choral francophone) for its generous support to the “Chasse-Galerie” project.

Auditions and Membership

Admission and membership is open to all students of the University and members of the community who are at least 18 years old. Members are re-auditioned every 4 years.

The Choir holds auditions in early September. The callout is usually posted in August here and on social media.

Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the School of Music, plus a few weekends if necessary. Instruction is in both official languages. Members are expected to attend all the rehearsals.
